Srbin u Njujorku i Amerikanka u Beogradu

bride and groom by the car

˝Marko and I are two classical musicans living in NYC.  He plays the piano and I play the cello. We met because we were playing chamber music together. We were friends first, but after so many hours rehearsing and performng together we got to know each other better and one thing lead to another...˝

Which American wedding traditions  you wanted at your Serbian wedding?

˝Well, it’s strange to imagine what a wedding looks like your whole life (from Hollywood, but also I used to play music at weddings) and then realize almost none of that will be the same at your own wedding. I wanted all the traditions I was used to--having bridesmaides, the rehearsal dinner with your friends and wedding party, the morning after brunch, walking into the church with your father and the groom seeing you in your dress for the first time, etc… But the more I learned about the Serbian traditions I become comfortable making those changes. And actually now that it’s over, I think some of the Serbian traditions are really great.˝

You've planned your wedding from overseas. Who helped you?

˝Mostly you and Bojana! Our parents and family all helped, but the biggest hurdle was managing everything overseas and that’s where you came in.˝

During a church ceremony, you were wearing your grandma’s dress.

˝My Aunt mentioned that she wore my grandmothers dress and that my grandmother mentioned to her that she should keep it in case I might like to wear it. I flew from NYC to Texas to try on the dress and see if it would even fit.  I was surprised to find that it didn’t need too many adjustments! It was really special to wear a dress that spanned three generations in my family.˝

˝Studio Pjaf and you two communicated really well with me.  I wanted a simple and elegant style. The floral arrangements on the tables were particularly great.˝

Guest gifts - ˝It’s a western tradition I guess to give guests a gift for coming. We chose a deck of cards because playing games is one of the activities we have always enjoyed together.˝

Polaroid Guest Book - ˝We had a table set up so you could take a picture of yourself (selfie) and tape it into the guest book along with a personal note. The guests that did it had a lot of fun taking the selfies

Sweet table - ˝This is something very popular at American weddings. Marko and I picked desserts that we really love and had SoSoSweet make them. We had mini cheesecakes and chocolate mousse for Marko and I had macarons and chocolate covered pretzels.  It was so popular that everything was gone from the table instantly!˝

Band - ˝The band was perfect. Their style was energetic and the guests were dancing all night. We had a traditional Serbian band play for a short time as well.˝

Venue - ˝The church was really beautiful and the priest even spoke some of the ceremony in English for me (can you imagine not understanding a word of your wedding ceremony?!)! The restaurant Vizantija was also great. All of our guests commented to us that the staff at Vizatija went above and beyond to make everyone comfortable.˝

Photo & Video - ˝The staff working on photography and video were very nice. They stayed enough out of the way, but still captured all the moments. I haven’t gotten to see all the video footage yet, but the short video they edited is really professional.˝

Cake - ˝This was probably one of my bigger concerns. There are no Serbian cakes that are close to American cakes. We have much fluffier, dryer cakes. I really wanted a cake that was personal to me at my wedding. At Anči kolači couldn’t do the flavors that I wanted, but I was really appreciative that they could do something close to what I wanted. They decorated the cake exactly to the picture I showed them. Very impressive considering they said my request was unusual (I asked for no fondant, no special decorations, but to have real flowers as decorations).˝

Wedding planners - ˝Sonja i Bojana were great the whole way through. I was particularly grateful that Sonja could translate everything for me!˝

What was the most emotional moment for you?

˝Probably when Marko surprised me by singing a song at the reception! He sang Pretty Girl by Eric Clapton.˝

What is the biggest difference between American and Serbian wedding in your opinion?

˝Maybe it’s the events leading up to the wedding ceremony.  At an American wedding, the groom and guests wait for the bride at the church instead of picking her up at her home. Of all the differneces, this one was probably what I had to explain to my family and guests the most.˝

Od početnih, opštih mejlova, preko onih u kojima smo definisali svaku stavku, do finalnih u kojima smo pričali o protokolu, Bojana i ja smo uživale u svakom koraku.

Do tada, Kejlu i Marka čekamo na kafi u Bg-u i negujemo prijateljstvo online.
